Author's Notes

In 1192, the Jews of England were living in harmony with their Christian neighbors. On September 4th, 1189, there was a riot against them at the coronation of Richard the Lionhearted. A massacre, or rather, a series of massacres followed, culminating at the largest in the city of York. Most of the Jewish population was slaughtered, a number committing suicide to escape something worse. What happened between these two dates? I wrote this book to answer that question. This small, single-nation eruption encompasses all the threads that would, 759 years later, result in the Holocaust. Most of the characters written about in this novel were live people, there at the time.
